Studio_week 6-16 * Editorial design

*1: Inspiration

#1: Minimal design

+ What I like about these designs: bold shape, high black-white contrast, visible grid

+ What I like about these designs: playing with big and clear type, white space, diagonal text suggesting movement

+ What I like about these designs: creating a form out of the text

+ What I like about these designs: warm color scemes, textcolor matching the page next to it, simplicity but still colorful

#2: Maximal design

+ What I like about these designs: illustrative

+ What I like about these designs: textures, layered, hand written text

+ What I like about these designs: dynamic type combined with smaller texts

*2: Design proposal 1 _ Minimal design

I created this first design combining a bold type with illustrations. I tried to keep it simple and play with big shapes and scribbled letters/ illustrations.

+ What I like about this design is the white space and the hand-made feeling.

– What I do not like about this design is that the readablity is not very well (to short/ long sentences) and the fact that at some pages there is not a lot going on. I think this is also a bit the point for a simplistic design but it could be more interesting and still minimalistic.

*3: Design proposal 2 _ maximal design

For my maximal design proposal I tried to make illustrations and combine this with big typography.

+ I like the clear type and the playfullness in foreground/ backround and big type.

– What I do not like is that it could be more maximalist and crazy and that there is not a clear devision between all of the different sorts of text.

*4: Chosen design

I liked the bold, clear type in proposal 2 and looked how I could make a playfull spread with just one roman type in different sizes.

  • Spreads for recipes > white backround with red illustrations?

  • Spreads for food hotspots > red backround

I also want to include some pages with just general information about some cultural things about groningen fitting the theme of food. For example a quote or typical food.

A map with all of the food places mentioned in the magazine

*Process: setting some design rules

  • Colors > basis is black/white, combined with yellow and red
  • Recipes > white backround with playfull text headers, for the rest of the text just playing with allignment, red illustrations
  • Information spreads > white + yellow, more detailed illustrations combined with simple red ones, big headers
  • Food spots > red backround?

Making more spreads

  • Adding:
    • infographics: all on a black backround
    • little illustrations on the top to know where you are in the book
    • Quote pages
    • Info pages about places to go
