After last class (tuesday the 8th) I’ve received some feedback. I incorporated this and also made 3 extra spread designs/variations so the client has choices. I decided to keep most of my original inspiration/ideas but played around with them to create the second set of designs to present to the client.
My last article spread design was a bit bland. Michiel gave me the feedback that it felt rushed and could use a little more pazazz since the title spread had so much personality. With this spread (see above) I added more rhythm and less ‘recht toe, recht aan’.
This is my second design for the poem ‘dream unburdened’. I added abstract shapes (shape inspiration is drawn from the poem) and kept the nostalgic, analog photo feel as mentioned last class.
My second design option for the title page of the article. I played with different compositions this time. I like this one even better than the last title page I made.
The second design option for the article/body text. Wanted to try it without an illustration to see if I could make it pop with just the typography. I also added the references paragraph this time around.

I chose to use different fonts together inspired by my adventure with the lycracet letters in de letterpress workshop. The workshop also inspired me to do more collage based illustrations, I used old analog pictures from my archive.

Research magazine design
I chose the gentlewoman as inspiration because of their use of photography. Personally I’m more illustrative, so I decided to focus on photography focused design (since we are going this route this semester). I like how the images flow with the type and how the images get space to breathe. To me, this magazine feels more like an art book, than a magazine.
YET caught my attention because of the cover. I love how they chose for a 3d extra piece of paper on the cover, stating the issue number and additional information. The content/colofon page is a great example of including photography within more practical pages. I like how they aligned the text and used white space. Same goes for the article ‘When society changes?’, the paragraphs are very kind to the eye.
The Walking Club Paper is very playful, showing that editorial design isn’t all the same. It’s different. I love how the photo-cutouts are used in the Paris spread, the use of minimalist looking design combined with photography and color and how they decided to do a portrait spread in a landscape layout.
