Task 4- Editorial Design

  1. Eye on Design

I felt as though this magazine is really relevant to this project because it is really fun to look through. Bright colours and a range of different text is used. I think this could relate to people who are coming of age because it is important to show them that they can have fun and silly things still. I feel as young adults we are all so eager to grow up and be so mature, however, it is important to enjoy being the age you are. I feel as though the ‘Eye on Design’ magazines offer the best of both worlds as they content of the magazines is enticing to the target audience. With a couple examples being ‘Worth’, ‘Gossip’, and ‘Distraction’, all of which are subjects that young adults are searching for.

The comic book style of the first spread I think would be very appealing to young teens. It is nostalgic and an easy way to read information.

2. Mold

I chose these next 3 spreads because of the layout of text- as someone who is put off by big bodies of text and honestly would probably not read a lot of it, the way that the text is split up into very separate paragraphs makes it so much easier to process and read. It is a lot more appealing and I would read this spread. I could imagine that for a lot of teens/ young teens this is more or less likely too. The middle spread I liked because it is minimal and it gives a good break from text with a clear emphasis on the imagery.

3. Drew Dettra

I felt as though this magazine has a bit of a rebellious feel to it that a lot of people who are coming of age could resonate with and could be engaging for them.

4. People of Print

I really like the simplicity of the grid used here. Her whole book follows the same grid and I think it is really effective. Having the text split up makes it easier and more appealing to read. Images can vary in size drastically but still fit together cohesively without anything looking out of place. I like the thick margins around the outside that add a strong frame to the page, in contrast to the facing page which takes up all the space.
