Honours Review

The way I normally like to work in illustration is with collaging and sometimes drawing over photographs. I like to create a new image with existing images. Normally I use my collages as a starting point for my new designs, but I also really like the look of the collages itself. So, for the magazine I want to incorporate my collaging skills. Under this you can see my inspiration.

Maybe it is because I’m from illustration, but I really like when you can see something is handmade. For example handwritten texts, scribbles over photographs etc. I like it even more when there is mistakes made, that you would not make if the project is digitally made.

This style could quickly become very messy, that’s why I (almost) only work in black and white. But for a magazine to make the design more interesting adding colour is almost necessary. I really like the way that is done in the design underneath, everything is black and white and they made it more interesting with a pop of yellow.

Drafts

As mentioned above I want to work with collages. But before I start collaging I want to figure out with what kind of grid I want to work with and how i can put the text into that grid. I really like to keep the grid simple, so I can go more crazy with the visuals. That’s why I chose for three colomns.

For the poem I have a Poem that my mom wrote when I was born. She wrote it in Frisian, I translated it to english. For the visuals I used old pictures of myself and my sister. As this is only a draft I would like to improve it with the collaging technique instead of only text and image.

First draft

I have big difficulties with this assignment. I tried my best and I think the outcome of this spread is a good approach to the idea of collaging a spread.

Honours Review cover

This was the first draft of my cover. After getting the feedback that the tear is the most obvious thing in the spread and not necessarily the text, I changed the thickness and size of the title. I also added a subtitle.
